About the role
We are seeking a proactive and technically skilled Occupational Hygiene Specialist to join our EMEA operations, based in Portugal. This regional role leads all matters relating to occupational hygiene across 24 countries, supporting 100+ mine and bulk sites, 7 manufacturing facilities, and several quarries throughout Africa, Europe, and the Middle East.
As a subject matter expert, you will be responsible for developing and implementing occupational hygiene programs, systems, and controls that ensure a safe and compliant work environment. You will collaborate with cross-functional teams including manufacturing, mining services, supply chain, and human resources, and work closely with HSE leaders, site managers, and regulatory bodies.
This role requires travel across the EMEA region approximately 40% of the time.

What you will be doing
As the Occupational Hygiene Specialist, you will be responsible for:

Hazard Identification & Risk Assessment
- Conducting qualitative assessments of chemical, physical, biological, and ergonomic hazards across manufacturing and mining sites
- Coordinating hygiene monitoring programs and site hygiene profiling
- Evaluating exposure levels to airborne contaminants, noise, vibration, and heat stress
- Assessing ventilation systems, dust control measures, and containment procedures
- Recommending maintenance and calibration protocols for hygiene monitoring equipment
- Representing EMEA in Orica’s global occupational hygiene communities of practice
- Establishing regional working groups focused on occupational hygiene and health
Control Measures & Program Implementation
- Developing and implementing engineering and administrative controls to mitigate health risks
- Leading programs for respiratory protection, PPE selection, and manual handling safety
- Overseeing hygiene procedures for hazardous substances (e.g., VOCs, asbestos, benzene)
- Supporting ergonomic improvements in workstations and production lines
Compliance & Documentation
- Ensuring compliance with Orica’s hygiene standards and regional regulatory requirements
- Preparing reports, maintaining hygiene records, and supporting internal and external audits
- Liaising with regulatory authorities and tracking corrective actions and KPIs
Training & Awareness
- Delivering training sessions on occupational hygiene, PPE usage, and safe work practices
- Promoting a culture of health and safety through awareness campaigns and toolbox talks
- Mentoring operations staff, supervisors, and HSE teams on hygiene protocols and hazard recognition
What you will bring
- Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Health, Environmental Science, Chemistry, or a related field
- Certification in Industrial Hygiene or Occupational Safety (e.g., NEBOSH, CIH) preferred
- Minimum 3 years of experience in occupational hygiene within manufacturing or industrial settings
- Experience with risk assessment tools and hygiene monitoring equipment
- Fluency in English; Portuguese is a strong asset
- Familiarity with Portuguese HSE regulations and ACT guidelines
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities
- Excellent communication, training, and stakeholder engagement skills
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and safety management systems
