Job Description
AbbVie Portugal is looking for an experienced and science-driven Medical Science Liaison (MSL) in Hematology to join our Medical Affairs team. As an MSL, you will serve as a trusted field-based expert, engaging with leading healthcare professionals, researchers, and institutions across the country. Your role is pivotal in translating complex scientific data into meaningful clinical dialogue, supporting early access to innovation, and shaping the future of hematologic care in Portugal. Primary Function
As a key member of the Affiliate Medical Department, the MSL is a field-based expert responsible for advancing scientific knowledge and standards of care in Hematology. This role supports healthcare providers, payers and investigators by providing access to high-quality, relevant information to ensure safe and effective use of AbbVie therapies.
You will engage primarily with Tier 1 and Tier 2 thought leaders and play a key role in facilitating medical dialogue around AbbVie's marketed products and pipeline assets. Scientific engagement must remain strictly non-promotional and fully compliant with all applicable laws, codes and policies.
You will also contribute to medical projects within the affiliate, support clinical research activities, and represent AbbVie in scientific discussions and external collaborations.
Responsibilities
Scientific Leadership & External Engagement
Develop strong, credible relationships with national and regional Hematology experts
Facilitate scientific exchange in academic centers and during congresses or advisory boards
Provide scientific and medical support in response to HCP requests, including off-label inquiries, through appropriate internal processes
Act as a point of contact for Investigator-Initiated Studies (IIS) and help bring these forward to regional/global teams
Cross-Functional Collaboration
Partner with internal teams (e.g. Marketing, Market Access, Brand) to ensure alignment on strategy while maintaining medical independence
Deliver scientific training to internal stakeholders to build therapeutic area knowledge
Maintain high standards of integrity in all educational and collaborative engagements
Clinical & Medical Project Support
Support the execution and follow-up of post-marketing studies and registries
Collaborate on site identification, feasibility discussions, and local study team contributions where relevant
Assist with compassionate use or named-patient access requests in accordance with all local and corporate regulations
Strategic Intelligence & Thought Leader Mapping
Monitor the Hematology landscape, competitor activities, and emerging trends to inform strategic initiatives
Contribute to the identification and engagement of key opinion leaders for clinical trials, advisory boards, and educational events
Support publication initiatives and ensure accurate dissemination of medical information
Accountability & Scope
Provide scientifically accurate input to Brand Teams and external stakeholders, under the oversight of the Medical Manager Hematology
Ensure full compliance with national laws, global policies, codes of conduct, and local standard operating procedures
Actively contribute to medical strategy and affiliate priorities through evidence-based interactions with the Hematology community
Qualifications
- Advanced degree (e.g. PharmD., MD, PhD) in a relevant scientific discipline is preferred but candidates with an undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline and demonstrated experience will be considered.
- Experience in developing and maintaining expert knowledge for the assigned therapeutic area, and in medical research in general.
- Solid knowledge of the pharmaceutical environment and the role of Medical Affairs to advance the medical and scientific objectives of a pharmaceutical company.
- Demonstrated expertise in the scientific methods applied to clinical research and current legislative/regulatory controls applicable to this research.
- Ability to comprehensively learn about new subject areas and environments.
- Excellent written and spoken communication and presentation skills, with a demonstrated ability to develop and maintain strong collaborative relationships with thought leaders, physicians and other healthcare decision makers.
