Position Overview
The Automation Engineer reports to the Production Manager and is a key contributor to the optimization of automation systems across the site. This role ensures reliable and efficient operation of automated processes, supports technical teams, and drives continuous improvement through the integration of control systems.
Primary Duties
- Lead the autonomous planning, coordination, and implementation of automation systems, including electrical and control technology, for technical projects.
- Specify, design, and implement efficient and cost-effective automation solutions, with a strong focus on Siemens PLC and WinCC SCADA systems.
- Commission new production equipment and retrofit existing systems with modern automation solutions.
- Train and support production operators and maintenance teams in the safe and efficient use of PLC and HMI/SCADA systems.
- Monitor, maintain, and continuously improve automation systems to increase production efficiency, reliability, and safety.
- Troubleshoot and resolve issues in PLC, SCADA (WinCC), drive, and sensor technologies to minimize downtime.
- Actively contribute to cross-functional teams to support process improvements and project delivery.
- Develop and maintain clear documentation of automation systems, including functional descriptions, electrical schematics, and PLC/SCADA programs.
- Ensure all automation-related activities comply with safety, quality, and regulatory requirements.
- Participate in the plant’s digital transformation roadmap by introducing Industry 4.0 concepts and advanced automation technologies.
- Work closely with suppliers and contractors for automation hardware and software implementation.
Minimum Requirements
Bachelor of Science in Automation Engineering or a comparable technical degree with significant professional experience.
Minimum of 5 years of hands-on experience in automation technology and process control systems.
Proven experience in process measurement and industrial sensor technology.
Strong knowledge of drive systems and motion control (e.g., frequency inverters, servo drives).
Proficiency in network and industrial communication protocols (e.g., Profinet, Profibus, Ethernet/IP).
Experience interpreting and working with P&IDs in process industries.
Demonstrated expertise in Siemens PLCs (S7 series) and SCADA systems, especially WinCC (Comfort, Advanced, or Professional versions).
Experience with the full lifecycle of automation projects (design, programming, commissioning, maintenance).
Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively in English; additional languages (e.g., German, Spanish) are a plus.
High level of autonomy, problem-solving mindset, and a proactive approach to continuous improvement.
Willingness to travel occasionally as required for project execution and commissioning activities.
