Responsibilities:

We are seeking a Senior Environmental Professional for a Project Manager (Environment) position to join our growing Environmental team in Lisbon or Porto, Portugal. This role is ideal for someone with a strong technical background and proven leadership skills, eager to contribute to impactful environmental projects both in Portugal and internationally.

As a Project Manager, you will lead a team supporting clients in the delivery of Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) studies. Solid knowledge and experience in EIA studies for infrastructure, energy, industrial, and similar projects is essential and considered a mandatory requirement.

You must also demonstrate strong project management expertise, covering the entire project lifecycle — from initial planning and coordination to execution, monitoring, and successful closure. This includes managing budgets, schedules, resources, and stakeholders to ensure high-quality environmental deliverables on time and within scope.

We envisage success in this role to include:

  • Coordinating and delivering the preparation of Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) studies and related permitting processes in line with national and international regulations.
  • Coordinating and delivering the preparation of international Environmental and Social Impact Assessments (ESIAs) in compliance with IFC Performance Standards and Equator Principles.
  • Reviewing and ensuring the quality and consistency of environmental deliverables, including environmental and social baseline studies, management plans, climate change risk assessment, biodiversity action plans, etc.
  • Managing a portfolio of projects to ensure these are delivered on time, on budget and to client satisfaction.
  • Maintaining and enhancing client relationships across a portfolio of clients. The Project Manager is the primary client interface in our organisation and shall foster a commitment to excellence in respect to client service and team collaboration to ensure repeat business.
  • Managing a team of 3 to 5 consultants delivering EIA/ESIA studies and associated technical scopes.
  • Overseeing the contractual and financial status of project portfolio in coordination with senior management.
  • Leading and facilitating multidisciplinary team meetings, prepare meeting agendas and notes.
  • Ensuring that meeting objectives are achieved, and that clear notes are circulated.
  • Managing all phases throughout project scope, including project set-up, design and project coordination meetings.
  • Planning and managing project scheduling, project budgets, project staffing, project work plan, and project set-up with project team and sub consultants.
  • Proactively identify, assess and mitigate project risks. Resolve problems through objective and systematic analysis.
  • Ensuring project standards and QAQC control procedures are implemented and maintained for each of the technical areas required to complete the job, to achieve high standards of design and documentation.
  • Tracking and proactively manage the financial performance of project, e.g. work plan, schedule, fees, billings and collections, to ensure completion of project within budget and with maximum profitability (this includes the completion of monthly project progress reports and preparing invoices and pursuing payments).
  • Creating and communicating clear and attainable project objectives and project requirements to key stakeholders, including appropriate and complete communication with the client.
  • Managing the performance of the project team to achieve high standards of design and documentation.
  • Exploring opportunistic business opportunities to expand our service offers.
  • Supporting the business development process, writing proposals, executing agreements.
Qualifications:

To be successful in this dynamic opportunity, we envision that your career journey to date will include 10+ years of relevant experience in Environmental Consultancy partnered with a Masters’ Degree level qualification in Environmental Engineering or similar. At least 5+ years’ experience working at Project Management Level.

The following qualifications are also necessary:

  • Knowledge and experience in the management of an entire project lifecycle.
  • Experience managing multiple projects simultaneously and meeting tight deadlines.
  • Minimum 8 years of professional experience in environmental consulting, including project management of EIA/ESIAs or other environmental-related projects.
  • Technical knowledge across disciplines (environmental engineering, ecology, biodiversity, physical and social environment).
  • Strong knowledge of Portuguese environmental regulations, permitting procedures, and institutional stakeholders is preferred.
  • Experience with international standards such as IFC, Equator Principles, and other lender requirements is desirable but not essential.
  • Excellent Portuguese and English communication skills, both written and spoken.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within multidisciplinary and multicultural teams.
  • Public speaking skills (conferences, meetings with internal global teams) is desirable.
  • Experience with management of team, resources, and time. Ability to work in a team environment and work on multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook) and familiarity with Adobe Acrobat.
  • Basic knowledge of MS project software is desirable but not essential.
  • Previous experience in sectors such as infrastructure, energy, industry, or urban development.
  • PMP certification would be an advantage.
